That story has had a profound effect on me, Jan. It's really a tribute to the longevity of the printed word. But you're right about the possibilities for all of us, to get something "out there".

Enjoyed the review, Jan. You gave enough of the essence of the book to make it enticing for me to search out.

Thank you.

Just a reminder - no matter how flat the pancake - it always has two sides. I understand you disagree with me, and I'm obviously providing you space to do so.

Feel free to tell us how you think. I welcome your thoughts.

There's no debate: The LDS Church did absolutely nothing in regards to stopping or preventing or suppressing or etc. the September Dawn movie. I think it's interesting that one of the writers had no problem with lying about that fact. Or maybe she is just mixing some fact with fiction to make historical history about the release of her failing movie.

Let's go to the non-Mormon critics!

Boston Globe, Ty Burr--
"...made-for-TV historical treacle that has somehow found its way to the big screen..."

New York Post, Kyle Smith--
"'SEPTEMBER Dawn" succeeds completely at failure; the unified incompetence of its writing, directing and acting suggest a man who manages to be on fire and drowning at the same time, just as the bus runs him over. I was baffled: Why does this film even exist? In the last act came the answer: The 1857 massacre of settlers it depicts happened on Sept. 11...Voight spends the movie glaring and cursing and heaving his arms in the air as if to signal a miraculous succession of touchdowns..."

New York Times, Matt Zoller Seitz--
The maudlin, grotesque western “September Dawn,” about the massacre on Sept. 11, 1857, of about 120 settlers by Mormons (and their Paiute Indian mercenaries), apes “Schindler’s List” in hopes of creating a Christian Holocaust picture.

"Kathi Macias, one of many writers on the Movie September Dawn has mentioned that the Church of Latter Day Saints has slowed up the Release of “September Dawn” because of the topic, a raid on a wagon train in the late 1800’s by the renegade Mormons."

The LDS Church made no attempt in any way to suppress this movie.

Well, guys, I'm not adverse to a truthful documentary. I'm sure there are more versions of this story out there, and I have no problem whatsoever sharing this discussion, or other versions of the story.

I actually love a nice well heated debate! My version is probably even different from another's version.

I'm not a big fan of the historical versions of "Cowboys and Indians" because the process often only shows one side of the story. The reality is, no matter what the story, there's always at least two sides.

My grandmother used to explain that quite simply - and her explanation worked, "No matter how thin the flap jack there's still two sides."

Perhaps instead of slaughtering the movie makers for telling one side of the story, we should busy ourselves in telling the other side of this story.

I can assure you, driving 200 miles to watch a movie isn't often on my 'agenda for the day' but this movie has stirred up enough interest for me that I'm interested in driving to see it.

Dianne, tell Hal he's buying dinner! ;)

It's only "part of our history" if it's accurate.

And that, to put it mildly, is debatable.

A grossly inaccurate story DOESN'T need to be told. People DON'T need to be embarrassed by falsehoods. Movies that misinform AREN'T valuable.

* I should add I don't represent the Church in any way, I am just a member.

I would also refer readers to a recent article by Richard E. Turley Jr., the Managing Director, Family and Church History Department. His article is published in the Sept. issue of the Church's magazine "The Ensign".

A quote from the article:

"Two facts make the case even more difficult to fathom. First, nothing that any of the emigrants purportedly did or said, even if all of it were true, came close to justifying their deaths. Second, the large majority of perpetrators led decent, nonviolent lives before and after the massacre."
